Hi. My name is Richard Baxton. I live in Ashbourne Hills, and I’m the new owner of Baxton Shipping in Wilmington, Delaware, although my title is a new one. My brother was the owner until the recent accident that took his life as well as his wife’s. Now, I have to make sense of everything and handle the books. That’s not easy. I am not good with numbers. I much prefer working on the ships my family’s company builds or operates.
Oh, and did I forget to mention I am also now the guardian for my niece, Grace? She’s 11 and the carriage accident left her without the use of her legs. We’ve been to countless doctors trying to find a way for her to walk again.
To say I never expected something like this is an understatement. But here I am, doing my best to run a company and care for my orphaned niece, who by the way, has a voracious appetite for books. And we recently discovered a book shop in Brandywine that has a rather charming owner. Not only is she quite knowledgeable about the books she sells or lends, but she has a way with Grace that not many ladies do. My niece never misses an opportunity to ask if she can accompany me on a visit to the book shop, or ask about Miss Charlotte Pringle in nearly every conversation.
But I don’t mind. Seeing Miss Pringle and talking about Grace is a lot better than being hunched over some dusty bookkeeping journals and financial matters for my company. And when Grace is happy, that makes taking care of her much easier. Thankfully, my mother also lives nearby and can come stay with Grace from time to time. My mother also helps when we have appointments with doctors or other specialists. Most of them reside in Philadelphia, and that is a long carriage ride. It is nice to have someone else along to answer Grace’s many questions.
So far, we have made 5 visits to Cobblestone Books in Brandywine, and each time, I wish we could prolong our stay. The most recent visit ended with a picnic in the park across the street. Miss Pringle shared all about the local water fowl and other creatures who make the park their home, and the tasty meal her cook prepared was enough to make a man return again and again. I have no doubt we will be seeing her again real soon.
All in all, despite the recent upheaval in my life, things are going as well as can be expected. Grace and I are adjusting to life together, the family business is continuing to operate, and my relationship with Miss Pringle is growing into something rather special. We also had spoke with a doctor in Philadelphia who is certain an operation will allow Grace to walk again. I look forward to seeing where this new path will take us.
